Workaround/Remedy: Manually reinstall the driver. I believe I have reason to really suspect that the USB drivers (and the reluctance of the manufacturer to advance them for the 8.1 OS…) are really at the root of the problem but, anyway, here’s how I remedied this:

I also found that I would lose my USB ports- yet inconsistently so -when either other Windows Updates had been installed or I simply placed a certain microSD plug- w/ its USB adapter -into one of the USB ports (I guess the system couldn’t handle the shock of an 8GB microSD?). I have got ASUS laptop G55VW (ROG series) and on ASUS website there is no drivers for win 10 (except 8 and 9 Series chipset) and yes, it's good to know if someone could help me, my chipset is HM77 Ivy Bridge. Trying everything, reinstalling, looking from ASUS website for drivers, but then I agreed with myself that I will wait until Win 10 came out so I had hope that this will solve my problem but it didn't! :-( I also looked on forums, different threads but no luck. After that I tried and tried to make USB 3.0 in function but not successful. After a while I have had installed fresh Win 8.1 system. So, before some time I had Win 8 and everything was fine.
